Bright wire, millberry, berry and candy, birch and cliff, copper tube and heavy copper materials reviewed against agreed specifications.

Bright bare copper wire scrap prepared for despatch

About copper scrap

Copper is the most specification-sensitive of the common non-ferrous categories. A small percentage of tinned wire, insulation residue or brass contamination can move material from one named grade to another, and with it the entire commercial basis of a transaction.

AceComex reviews copper offers and requirements against named grades rather than general descriptions, and encourages photographs of the actual material together with an honest statement of contamination before anything is presented to a counterparty.

Common material categories

  • Millberry — bare bright copper wire, clean and uncoated
  • Berry — clean unalloyed copper wire and cable of heavier gauge
  • Candy — clean unalloyed copper clippings and solids
  • Birch / Cliff — mixed unalloyed copper scrap with permissible tolerance
  • Copper tube and pipe, free of fittings where specified
  • Heavy copper and copper busbar

Quality considerations

Grade drift

Loads that begin as a named grade can drift when additional stock is blended in during accumulation.

Insulation residue

Mechanically stripped wire may retain insulation fragments that affect recovery and grade.

Alloy contamination

Brass and bronze pieces are easily overlooked and materially change the assay.

Moisture and oil

Water and residual oil increase weight without adding recoverable metal.

Loading discipline

Photographic evidence at the point of loading reduces disputes about what was shipped.

Analysis

Where composition is uncertain, laboratory testing can be agreed between the parties.
