Stainless Steel Scrap Trading and Indenting

304, 316 and mixed stainless grades where composition, magnetic content and attachments require careful verification before shipment.

About stainless steel scrap

Stainless steel is valued on its nickel, chromium and molybdenum content, so composition verification matters more here than in almost any other category. Visual similarity between grades makes misdescription easy, whether deliberate or accidental.

AceComex encourages analyser readings, clear photographs and, where the value justifies it, laboratory testing or third-party inspection before stainless material is presented to a consuming buyer.

Common material categories

  • 304 solids, sorted and free of attachments where specified
  • 304 turnings, drained and free of excessive oil
  • 316 solids and 316 turnings
  • Mixed stainless within a stated composition range
  • Stainless sheet, pipe and vessel scrap
  • Magnetic stainless grades, declared separately

Quality considerations

Grade misidentification

304 and 316 are visually similar; analyser verification protects both parties.

Magnetic content

Magnetic stainless and free iron reduce value and should be declared separately.

Turnings condition

Excess coolant, oil and moisture materially reduce recovery and add weight.

Blended alloys

Mixing grades without disclosure changes the assay basis for the consumer.

Attachments

Gaskets, plastic fittings and insulation on vessel scrap require removal or disclosure.

Testing

Laboratory testing can be agreed where the parcel value justifies it.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Are analyser readings required?
They are not mandatory, but they significantly improve how seriously an offer can be reviewed, particularly for mixed or high-value parcels.
Are turnings and solids priced on the same basis?
No. They are separate categories with different recovery characteristics and should be offered separately.
Is mixed stainless considered?
Yes, where the composition range is honestly stated and the buyer's tolerance allows it.
